Carolyn Wimbly Martin brings to Lutzker & Lutzker over 25 years experience as an accomplished intellectual property lawyer and business executive developing intellectual properties that generate revenue and build brands. She has a proven track record in helping clients identify, protect and leverage their intellectual properties.
Ms. Martin is the co-founder and Principal of Giving Tree Group, LLC, a brand building and intellectual property development consulting firm for non-profit organizations and value-based companies. Her clients have included Catholic Charities USA, Cambridge Information Group, CSA, the National Archives Experience, Shakespeare Theatre, The Patricia M. Sitar Center for the Arts, Sotheby's Institute of Art—London and New York and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA/GLOBALCOMM). Ms. Martin spent 16 years at Gannett Co., Inc, most recently as Director of New Media, Planning and Development, where she helped build the USA TODAY brand and introduced over 50 new market-driven products in education, print, electronic publishing and merchandising.
Her legal practice has focused on intellectual property law, licensing, acquisitions and transactional matters for leading media companies. She served for five years as Assistant General Counsel at Gannett. Prior to joining Gannett in 1985, she was in private practice at Dow, Lohnes & Albertson in Washington , DC .
Ms. Martin has 20 years experience as an Adjunct Professor of Intellectual Property, Media and Internet law. She currently teaches Intellectual Property Management at American University 's Washington College of Law. This is considered one of the first courses of its kind. She has also taught at Howard University and George Mason University Schools of Law, as well as University of Maryland University College Graduate Business School.
Ms. Martin has spoken internationally and authored articles on electronic publishing. She has served on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards such as the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, Duke University Board of Visitors, Greater Washington Boys & Girls Club, Georgetown Day School, Links, Inc., Washington, D. C. and the Counsel for Court Excellence, as well as emerging companies, including Away.com, Legacy.com, Inc. and Luxury Link, LLC. Ms. Martin is a past co-chair of the Multimedia Committee of the Arts, Entertainment and Sports Law Section of the District of Columbia Bar.
Prior to attending law school, Ms. Martin worked in marketing at AT&T and for a noted art gallery in Charleston , South Carolina .
She holds a BA in Public Policy and Psychology from Duke University and a JD from Harvard Law School.
