    Jeannette Maurer Carmadella’s practice focuses on intellectual property law, with particular emphasis on counseling clients in copyright and trademark matters and managing client trademark and copyright portfolios. She advises clients on trademark selection, clearance, prosecution, registration, licensing and enforcement matters. She has wide-ranging experience protecting client copyrights, including assisting clients with federal copyright registration and defending against print and online infringement, with special expertise in representing photographers. In addition, she assists clients with issues of domain name disputes, false and misleading advertising and rights of publicity. She represents clients in Trademark Trial and Appeal Board proceedings and in federal court litigation. Ms. Carmadella also speaks to association members and university students on copyright law, licensing and fair use in the media.

    Prior to joining Lutzker & Lutzker, Jeannette worked as a legal intern at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, focusing on the museum’s copyright and trademark issues. She was a summer associate at a boutique litigation firm in Bethesda, Maryland. She also worked as a legal intern in the General Counsel’s Office of The Broadcasting Board of Governors. Prior to law school, Jeannette was a legal assistant in the technology department of Arent Fox, PLLC’s trademark practice group. She previously had legislative experience with the Parkinson’s Action Network.

  • Representing Bob Riha, Jr., a USA Today freelance photographer in copyright infringement claims.
  • Successfully resolving a suit by Rudy K, a prominent Washington, D.C. photographer, against The Washington Blade, a leading newspaper for the gay and lesbian community for copyright infringement and breach of contract claims involving multiple unauthorized reproductions of his photographs in print and online.
  • Litigating in federal court on behalf of plaintiffs, including:
  • Legendary soul singer Sam Moore alleging that the 2008 film Soul Men infringed his trademarks, persona and publicity rights.
  • Los Angeles screenwriter Yolanda Buggs against DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures alleging copyright infringement of a screenplay she wrote as a graduate student at the American Film Institute.
  • the creators of the award-winning STOMP ROCKET® toy against the manufacturers/importers and distributors of a knock-off.
  • Representing Music Makers Holdings LLC in a trademark infringement dispute with the operator of a New York music school over the ownership and use of the mark BACH TO ROCK for music education services, including managing trademark filings and domain name acquisitions for the company and the acquisition of pre-existing rights to the mark.
  • Successfully concluding the copyright infringement and false advertising claim of Mary Buck, a jewelry designer whose work was improperly exploited in print advertising and online by Vera Wang’s company.
