History & Philosophy

In 1998 Arnold Lutzker and Susan Lutzker founded Lutzker & Lutzker LLP to be a small, dynamic firm that would apply creative legal solutions to client needs, while maintaining the commitment to excellence that had been a driving force in both of their prior careers. The Lutzkers envisioned a "digital age" practice in which they could couple the legal skills they had honed over the years with their experience in business and the arts to help creative professionals build sound legal protections for their intellectual property, to guide new and growing businesses in managing legal risks and challenges, to equip arts and other nonprofit organizations to sustain their objectives through good governance, to participate in policy-making, and to act as a resource for other lawyers.

Carl Settlemyer, also an original Lutzker & Lutzker team member and a practicing musician as well as an experienced lawyer, shared the Lutzkers' vision. Effective January 1, 2004 he became a partner, and the firm name was changed to Lutzker, Lutzker & Settlemyer LLP. In April 2006 he left private practice to join the FTC, where he is an attorney in the Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The Lutzkers and Mr. Settlemyer were joined in 2000 by Allison Rapp. The firm attorneys collectively bring many years of managerial experience in the for-profit and nonprofit world to their legal practice. The firm’s small size and non-bureaucratic setting encourage a broad view of client needs in a wide variety of practice areas. Participation in current legislative and policy arenas is an additional firm asset: Arnold Lutzker represented clients in legislative negotiations leading to the passage of copyright reform laws designed to address the tensions between content owners and users that make headline news every day. Our attorneys are oriented toward helping clients resolve problems in a practical, expeditious and cost-effective manner, but we are experienced litigators when negotiations break down.

Other lawyers frequently turn to the firm for our intellectual property expertise and advice, and we pride ourselves on contributing our skills to a team approach to challenging legal problems.

The firm strives to provide high quality, personalized legal services in a creative environment. Our attorneys thrive on cutting edge issues but equally value the opportunity to serve clients in their everyday needs.
